Using Your Pony Bead Loom

Your pony bead loom can be used to create beaded banners, displays, coasters, purses, belts, headbands, key chains, or to decorate a box!  They are great to give as gifts or keep them for your own treasures.

MATERIALS NEEDED:

 INSTRUCTIONS:

  • Thread your needle with 2 yards of yarn.  Tie the end of the yarn to an outside warp thread (leave a tail you can weave back in later).  String the first row of beads from pattern onto the yarn.  Note: If you are right-handed, tie onto the left warp; If you are left-handed, tie onto the right warp.  Read chart from left to right for right-handers; read right to left for left-handers.
  • Bring the string of beads under the row of wrapped thread, fitting each bead between 2 warp threads. (Important: You should start your pattern so that the rows of beads are lined up with the little loops wrapped around the notches; These will be used for hanging later.)  While holding beads firmly up against the warp threads (you can slip your hand under to help hold them up), double back through the row of beads with the yarn on top of the warp threads this time.  This row of beads will now be securely anchored in place.
  • Continue the pattern, pushing each row of beads snugly up against the previous row.  Do not pull the yarn too tightly at the edges, or the edges will become curved.
  • Tie yarn to the last thread, leaving a tail as before.
  • If you have tails of thread remaining at bottom of pattern:  Cut tails near notches, then tie each of the two ends together close to beads to form a fringe.  Trim to desired length.  Slip pattern off top of cardboard.  Slip a dowel, branch, or wire through the loops remaining at top.  Attach a pretty ribbon or yarn to dowel, and tie in a bow to hang.
  • If your pattern reaches bottom of cardboard, and only the loops remain:  Slip pattern off bottom of cardboard.  Attach a fringe to each loop using a lark's head knot.  Slip pattern off top of cardboard.  Slip a dowel, branch, or wire through the loops remaining at top.  Attach a pretty ribbon or yarn to dowel, and tie in a bow to hang.
  • Attach needle to tails you left before, and weave them back through a few beads to hide them.

TIPS:

To join new yarn, use a weavers knot & trim close to knot.  Continue weaving as if it were the same yarn.  During beading the knot should end up inside a bead to hide it.
