Faux Stained Glass

Faux Stained Glass is a simplified version of stained glass art which does not require the same long list of tools or well honed skills of the stained glass artist.  This technique is a fast and easy way to simulate the look of stained glass on a variety of surfaces: windows, sun catchers, glass table tops, glass containers, dishes, ornaments, candle holders, wine glasses and lamps.

MATERIALS NEEDED:

  • Craft Pattern
  • Glass project surface
  • Window cleaner
  • Masking tape
  • Black dimensional paint
  • Stained glass paints
  • Paint brushes

INSTRUCTIONS:

  • Enlarge or reduce your craft pattern on a copy machine to get just the size you need for your project surface.
  • Clean the glass project surface.
  • Tape your craft pattern to the back of your glass project surface, so that the craft pattern shows through.  If you have chosen a glass project surface which is round, tape your craft pattern inside the glass container, so that the pattern shows through.
  • Following the lines of your pattern, make an outline with black dimensional paint to create the look of "leading".
  • When outlining dries, paint inside all the lines with glass paint.

TIPS:

Start outlining in the center of your pattern and work to the outside.  This prevents smudging from trying to reach across areas that have already been outlined.
